I'm Grateful For Craigslist
You never know when, where, or how you'll meet the life-changing souls.
I met my best friend Jess on Craigslist. Hi, Jess (today is her birthday). Happy 29th Birthday, Jess!
We love to brag about the fact that we met on Craigslist. Most people get a kick out of it because Craigslist is where you find cheap shit or creepy random listings. Not where you find life-changing friendships.
In 2017, Jess was moving to Denver from Boston while I was transitioning from my hometown, Colorado Springs, to Denver. We were both 22 and had recently graduated from college.
I found a listing for a very strange basement bedroom in a very cute house located in a lovely neighborhood. When I showed up to meet Jess (and our other roommate Blaire) did I know I was going to stumble upon a soul mate status friendship that would radically impact my life? No.
While living together we started to plant roots for friendship, but honestly, it took about 5 years before our friendship flourished into the "I am doing life with this person” level. Ironically, our friendship started to deepen when we were living in different cities, different states even different countries. Which I believe is a testament to the divine nature of our connection. Most friendships would fade away, ours came to the forefront.
We both left our relationships in 2022, and, from my perspective, this was the catalyst of both of our spiritual awakenings. We have spent the last few years supporting and witnessing each other through this transformation. Even when we were on completely different parts of this planet (at one point I was in Mexico and she was in New Zealand), we would still find each other for 2-hour long phone calls filled with stories and sometimes tears. We are there for each other during the celebrations and the challenges. We hold each other for the victories and the vicious lessons.
Jess has been an amazing teacher regarding relationships. Our friendship has challenged me to embrace the different seasons that every relationship is bound to face. Some seasons are filled with late-night dance parties and deep conversations while other seasons are filled with uncomfortable elongated periods of silence as the other is working through something big. Seeing each other through all these seasons and allowing our friendship to ebb and flow as necessary to support our individual growth and our growth as friends is so fucking special.
It has been a gift to walk life with Jess. I am blessed to witness her grow and transform. And more importantly, I am deeply inspired by the way she lives her free and fearless life.
You never know when, where, or how you are going to meet the life-changing souls. Keep your heart open and know that God and The Universe are working behind the curtain to align you with the people who are going to bolster your life with radical love and support.
Happy birthday, Jess. I am grateful for Craigslist.
